You have convinced me to go to the New Forest! If only I had more weekends! I wonder if it's doable in a day from here? I live near the M40 and the M25.

Kathy it is only about 90 mins drive on a good day. M25 until you reach the M3 near Heathrow. M3 until you reach the M27 (west) come off at end of motorway and you are on the A31 the forest is on both sides of the road.
Lyndhurst is main Village known as capital of the New Forest, but there are other villages and plenty of forest car parks and pubs many several hundreds of years old.
The forest is beeautiful all year round. Late August and all the heather is blooming. Late october and you get the autumn colours starting and you also get the deer rut. Spring you get the new born foals , but foals are born from late March till early september.
