lovely shot Mary - has one of those ponies been branded up near its collar? - poor thing :-(
Hi Val,
yea all the ponies are rounded up in the autumn and those that are left on the forest are branded for a number of reasons. Firstly although they are semi wild they do all belong to the commoners that live on the forest and branding is needed to determine ownership. Also with out some marks rustlers could simply steal the ponies . If you find an injured pony on the forest being able to give the brand mark will help the agisters find both the animal you have reported and the owner.
