So I thought I would reccommend a book you may like to read.
The Forest by Edward Rutherfurd was published in 2000. It is a very readable book tracing the story of The New Forest from the11th century, when William the Conqueror decided to turn the area into a Royal hunting park, right up until the end of the 20th century when plans were a foot to make this Englands smallest and newest National Park. By tracing the lives of 7 fictional families through the Centuries, He tells the History of the Forest and explains how local customs and traditions came about. Many of the places and buildings are still here today and references to legends and History can be found in Place names and Inn names.
In April 2005 The New Forest became a National Park and In April of this Year the New Authorities took over the running of the Park. We have yet to see how this will affect the area and how the New National Park will work to protect the long established customs and traditions associated with this area.
